Black Holes in my School

About This Course

The course will involve an online teacher training workshop to introduce teachers to the basic aspects of black holes and all the curriculum content that can be addressed while studying stellar black hole candidates and also to how to use robotic telescopes to acquire data, how to use image processing software and other ICT tools to analyze the data. Teachers will have the opportunity to learn new tools and resources and experiment the use of a student centered model while addressing specific curriculum content. Teachers will be exposed to all the steps of the scientific method by using the inquiry based approach in cutting edge virtual labs for education. By the end of the project they will have learned how scientists work and will improve their critical thinking and communication skills.

The course will involve also the implementation and evaluation in the class of the concepts and tools presented in the virtual teacher training workshop. Teachers will plan and implement a module using the resources learned and will identify what its strong points and difficulties. Pupils’ motivation and learning outcomes will also be measured. Teacher training workshop format will be similar to the approach they will have to develop with their own pupils. Teachers participating in the training will have the opportunity to help enhance the training and support the implementation of further experiences alike BHIMS.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course students will be able to:
  • Integrate the use of modern tools and resources in their daily lesson.
  • Understand the necessary steps to ensure a good team dynamics in classroom for applying the inquiry based methodology.
  • Understand the complex nature of teachers’ professional knowledge and especially technological pedagogical content knowledge of inquiry science learning methodology.
  • Evaluate the impact of the use of such methodology and evaluate the possibility of spreading the example to other topics or fields of expertise. In this scope, teachers will have to gather research data about their pupils understanding of the scientific method: planning an investigation, building and analyzing data, communicating their ideas to others and participating in peer review process.

  • What are the requirements and obstacles teachers’ face when to embracing this mission?
  • What is the impact of an inquiry learning approach through the use ICT tools and virtual labs on pupils’ motivation and learning outcomes about the topic of gravity and its consequences?
